by Plato
recording of Plato's "Republic" read by volunteers. The Republic is a Socratic dialogue by Plato, written in approximately 380 BC. It is one of the most influential works of philosophy and political theory, and arguably Plato's best known work.
In it, Socrates and various other Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and whether the just man is happier than the unjust man by constructing an imaginary city ruled by philosopher-kings. The dialogue also discusses the nature of the philosopher, Plato's Theory of Forms, the conflict between philosophy and poetry, and the immortality of the soul. Not a single chapter felt like filler. Plato respects your time and delivers value throughout. Went in expecting decent, came out genuinely impressed.
There are books you finish and forget. Then there are books like Plato's Republic that you keep going back to mentally. This is the second kind. Brilliant.
My partner overheard me listening and ended up sitting down with me for the rest of it. We're both still talking about it. That's not nothing.
I specifically look for audiobooks with a natural narration style — nothing worse than robotic delivery. This nails it. Very easy to listen to for long stretches.
