recording of "Famous Men of the Middle Ages" by John H. B. Poland "THE study of history, like the study of a landscape, should begin with the most conspicuous features.
The famous men of ancient and modern times are the mountain peaks of history. Not only is it logical; it is also pedagogical. Experience has proven that in order to attract and hold the child's attention each conspicuous feature of history presented to him should have an individual for its center.
The child identifies himself with the personage presented. " (Excerpt from the Preface of "Famous Men of the Middle Ages") For further information, including links to online text, reader information, RSS feeds, CD cover or other formats (if available), please go to the catalog page for this recording.

I almost skipped this one because the title didn't grab me. Really glad I didn't. The content inside is miles ahead of what the description suggests.
The way John H. Haaren and A.B. Poland uses stories and examples to illustrate points is really effective. Doesn't feel like a lecture at all — more like a conversation.
I've been in a reading slump for months and this finally broke it. Something about Famous Men of the Middle Ages just clicked and now I'm back to listening every day. Grateful for it.
Recommended by my colleague and I see why. The kind of book that makes you feel smarter without making you feel like you're studying. Light touch, heavy impact.
