The Return of Tarzan audiobook by Edgar Rice Burroughs pulls listeners into a world where jungle royalty meets European intrigue, promising a fresh chapter in a beloved saga.
Tarzan, still haunted by the loss of his chance with Jane Porter, leaves America for a European sojourn. On a ship bound for Paris, he is drawn into a tangled web of aristocratic deceit, with Countess Olga de Coude, her husband Count Raoul, and the shadowy Nikolas Rokoff and Alexis Paulvitch plotting against them. The tension rises as Tarzan’s primal instincts clash with the refined expectations of high society, forcing him to confront his own identity and the cost of honor.
The narrative thrives on the clash between raw wilderness and polished court life, each scene pulsing with the scent of rain-soaked forests and the clink of crystal. Burroughs’ prose, now voiced, feels like a heartbeat—steady, urgent, and alive. The stakes are personal and political, and the stakes feel real because the characters are flawed, driven, and unmistakably human.
The audiobook’s charm lies in its cast of varied narrators, each voice carving distinct personalities: a deep, resonant tone for Tarzan, a hushed, conspiratorial whisper for the Countess, and a brisk, almost theatrical delivery for the villains. Their interplay turns the story into a living dialogue, inviting listeners to feel the wind in the trees and the weight of a crown. Okay so I'm not usually big on audiobooks but a friend insisted I try this. Three chapters in and I was completely sold. The Return of Tarzan is genuinely well-made — the content, the pacing, all of it.
Found this on Unodio and wasn't expecting much. Two hours later I was still going. Edgar Rice Burroughs doesn't waste your time with filler — every chapter earns its place.
I've been listening during my evening walks and The Return of Tarzan has been the highlight of my week honestly. There's a section in the middle where it all just comes together — gave me chills.
What I appreciate most is that Edgar Rice Burroughs doesn't talk down to you. The ideas are complex but explained in a way that respects your intelligence. Really rare.
