The book's full title is On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. It introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It was controversial because it contradicted religious beliefs which underlay the then current theories of biology.
Darwin's book was the culmination of evidence he had accumulated on the voyage of the Beagle in the 1830s and added to through continuing investigations and experiments since his return. Good balance of depth and accessibility. You don't need a background in this topic to follow along, but it never feels dumbed down either. Well done.
Finished it in four sittings. Usually takes me weeks to get through an audiobook. Says a lot about how gripping On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection is.
I almost skipped this one because the title didn't grab me. Really glad I didn't. The content inside is miles ahead of what the description suggests.
The way Charles Darwin uses stories and examples to illustrate points is really effective. Doesn't feel like a lecture at all — more like a conversation.
