About this Audiobook

by Oscar Wilde

📖 Synopsis & Plot Overview

Listen to the complete audiobook of 'Canterville Ghost' by Oscar Wilde, a classic tale that has been delighting readers for generations. This charming audiobook is a must-listen for anyone who loves a good ghost story with a comedic twist. The story follows the American Minister and his family as they move into the English stately home Canterville Chase, which is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville.

🔍 Key Themes & Narrative Depth

As the family settles into their new home, they begin to experience all manner of ghostly goings-on, from blood-stains to clanking chains. However, these modern Americans are not ones to be intimidated by a few spooky occurrences. Instead, they set out to beat the specter at his own game, using their wit and cunning to outsmart the ghost. Along the way, Wilde pokes fun at the conventions of traditional ghost stories, creating a humorous and lighthearted tale that is full of clever twists and turns.

One of the key themes of 'Canterville Ghost' is the clash between old and new, as the traditional English ghost is faced with the modern American family. This clash leads to all sorts of humorous misunderstandings and cultural commentary, as Wilde uses the ghost story as a vehicle to explore the differences between the old world and the new. The result is a tale that is both a hilarious comedy and a thought-provoking commentary on the nature of tradition and progress.

The audiobook is brought to life by the talented narrator David Barnes, who delivers a pitch-perfect performance that captures the wit and charm of Wilde's writing. With his smooth and engaging voice, Barnes draws the listener into the world of the story, making it easy to become fully immersed in the tale. More depth than the title suggests

I almost skipped this one because the title didn't grab me. Really glad I didn't. The content inside is miles ahead of what the description suggests.

Emotional, honest, and beautifully told

The way Oscar Wilde uses stories and examples to illustrate points is really effective. Doesn't feel like a lecture at all — more like a conversation.

This changed how I see things

I've been in a reading slump for months and this finally broke it. Something about Canterville Ghost just clicked and now I'm back to listening every day. Grateful for it.

The pacing is just right — never drags

Recommended by my colleague and I see why. The kind of book that makes you feel smarter without making you feel like you're studying. Light touch, heavy impact.
