Plato (c. 428 – c. 348 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher born in Athens during the Classical period. He founded the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world, and is widely considered the pivotal figure in the history of Ancient Greek and Western philosophy.
A devoted student of Socrates, Plato preserved his teacher's dialectical method through Socratic Dialogues. His masterwork, The Republic, explores justice, the ideal state, the Allegory of the Cave, and the nature of the soul.
