Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797 – 1851) was an English novelist who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus (1818), which is widely celebrated as the first true science fiction novel in human history.
Daughter of political philosopher William Godwin and feminist activist Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. She conceived Frankenstein during the famous 'year without a summer' (1816) while staying near Lake Geneva with Lord Byron.
