Biography & Literary Achievements

Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) was an English novelist whose six major works interpret, critique, and comment upon the British landed gentry at the turn of the 19th century. Renowned for her sharp social satire, biting wit, and deep psychological realism, Austen's novels explore the dependence of women on marriage for social standing and financial security.

Born in Steventon, Hampshire, Austen began writing in her youth and produced timeless classics including Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1815). Her tragic death at age 41 was followed by the posthumous publication of Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (1817).
