Hermann Karl Hesse (1877 – 1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include Demian, Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge and spirituality.
Born in Calw, Germany, Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. His timeless spiritual masterpiece Siddhartha (1922) depicts a young Brahmin's spiritual quest in ancient India during the era of Gautama Buddha.
