Herman Melville (1819 – 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. His best-known works include Typee (1846), a romantic account of his experiences in Polynesia, and his epic masterpiece Moby-Dick (1851).
Born in New York City, Melville worked as a sailor on whaling ships across the Pacific Ocean before composing Moby-Dick. The novel details Ishmael's voyage aboard the whaling ship Pequod, commanded by the monomaniacal Captain Ahab in pursuit of the legendary white whale.
