Dante Alighieri (c. 1265 – 1321), simply called Dante, was an Italian poet, writer, and political thinker. His Divine Comedy (La Divina Commedia), originally called Commedia and later christened Divina by Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language.
Exiled from his beloved Florence due to political factionalism, Dante composed his epic narrative depicting a visionary journey through the three realms of the afterlife: Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Heaven), guided by the Roman poet Virgil and his idealized love Beatrice.
