Charlotte Brontë (1816 – 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels have become classics of English literature.
Born in Thornton and raised in the parsonage at Haworth, Yorkshire, Charlotte published under the pen name Currer Bell. Her masterpiece Jane Eyre (1847) transformed English fiction through Jane's uncompromising moral integrity, passion, and resilience as a governess at Thornfield Hall opposite Edward Rochester.
