Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838 – 1894) was an Indian novelist, poet and journalist. He was the composer of Vande Mataram, originally in Sanskrit, personifying India as a mother goddess and inspiring activists during the Indian Independence Movement.

Born in Naihati, Bengal, Bankim wrote 14 novels. His masterwork Anandamath (1882) portrays Sannyasi rebellion against British taxation during the Bengal famine of 1770.
