Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Antonio Manzoni (1785 – 1873) was an Italian poet and novelist. He is best known for his novel The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi, 1827), generally ranked among the masterpieces of world literature.
Born in Milan, Manzoni's historical masterpiece The Betrothed chronicles young lovers Renzo and Lucia striving to reunite amidst 17th-century Spanish rule, famine, war, and the devastating Milan Plague of 1630.
