Abū Naṣr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Fārābī (c. 872 – 950/951), known in the West as Alpharabius, was a renowned early Islamic polymath, philosopher, jurist, and musician.
Born in Farab (Kazakhstan), Al-Farabi studied in Baghdad. His masterwork The Virtuous City (Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City, c. 940) synthesized Plato's Republic with Islamic political ethics.
