About this Audiobook

by Rafael Sabatini

📖 Synopsis & Plot Overview

Scaramouche, the audiobook by Rafael Sabatini, opens with a laugh that echoes through the cobblestones of revolutionary France, pulling listeners straight into a world where wit is as sharp as a sabre.

🔍 Key Themes & Narrative Depth

The story follows a young aristocrat whose talent for speech and swordplay turns him into a folk hero and a target of political intrigue. His internal battle—between the desire for freedom and the weight of his aristocratic past—unfolds against the backdrop of a nation tearing itself apart. The tension rises as he navigates court politics, theatrical stages, and clandestine meetings, each scene charged with the scent of gunpowder and the clatter of applause.

The narrative’s heart beats in the clash of ideals and the rhythm of a man who refuses to be a pawn. Sabatini paints a vivid tableau of Parisian streets, smoky taverns, and the quiet moments of reflection that reveal the protagonist’s humanity. The stakes are personal and national, making every decision feel like a step toward or away from liberty.

🎙️ Listening Experience

The varied voices of the narrators bring the characters to life, each inflection matching the mood of the scene—warm, urgent, or sardonic. Their pacing keeps the story moving, while subtle tonal shifts highlight the emotional undercurrents. Listening to this audiobook feels like stepping into a living, breathing theater, and you’re invited to experience it all for free on Unodio.

Genuinely surprised by how good this is

Listened to this over a long weekend trip. By the time I got home I'd already recommended it to three people. Scaramouche is just one of those books that sticks.

A slow start but completely worth it

The narration quality on this is impressive. Clear, well-paced, and the tone matches the content perfectly. Makes a big difference when you're listening for hours.

Perfect for my morning commute

I kept pausing to think about what I just heard. That's the mark of a good book for me — when it makes you stop and actually reflect. Scaramouche did that consistently.

One of my favourite finds this year

Not a single chapter felt like filler. Rafael Sabatini respects your time and delivers value throughout. Went in expecting decent, came out genuinely impressed.
