About this Audiobook

by Jonathan Swift

📖 Synopsis & Plot Overview

Listen to the complete audiobook of 'Modest Proposal' by Jonathan Swift, a scathing satire that has been a cornerstone of English literature since its publication in 1729. This thought-provoking audiobook presents a unique blend of dark humor and social commentary, offering listeners a glimpse into the tumultuous world of 18th-century Ireland.

🔍 Key Themes & Narrative Depth

At its core, 'Modest Proposal' is a biting critique of the social and economic conditions that plagued Ireland during Swift's time. The audiobook's central premise – that poor Irish families should sell their children to wealthy landowners as a means of alleviating poverty – is a masterful example of satire, using absurdity and irony to expose the harsh realities of a society torn apart by sectarianism and economic inequality. Through this provocative narrative, Swift tackles themes of colonialism, class struggle, and the dehumanizing effects of poverty, raising important questions about the nature of morality and the human condition.

One of the key strengths of 'Modest Proposal' is its ability to balance humor and pathos, creating a listening experience that is both unsettling and thought-provoking. As a work of satire, the audiobook walks a fine line between ridicule and outrage, using its clever wordplay and clever characterizations to skewer the social and political elites of Swift's time. By exploring the complexities of human nature and the dangers of unchecked power, 'Modest Proposal' offers a searing indictment of the social ills that have plagued human societies for centuries, making it a work of enduring relevance and importance.

🎙️ Listening Experience

The listening experience is further enhanced by the skilled narration of John Gonzalez, whose clear and expressive voice brings Swift's witty prose to life. With its unique blend of humor, satire, and social commentary, 'Modest Proposal' is an audiobook that will appeal to fans of literary classics, history buffs, and anyone looking to challenge their perspectives on the world. Better than I thought it would be

I've been listening during my evening walks and Modest Proposal has been the highlight of my week honestly. There's a section in the middle where it all just comes together — gave me chills.

This one stayed with me for days

What I appreciate most is that Jonathan Swift doesn't talk down to you. The ideas are complex but explained in a way that respects your intelligence. Really rare.

Genuinely surprised by how good this is

Listened to this over a long weekend trip. By the time I got home I'd already recommended it to three people. Modest Proposal is just one of those books that sticks.

A slow start but completely worth it

The narration quality on this is impressive. Clear, well-paced, and the tone matches the content perfectly. Makes a big difference when you're listening for hours.
