Abandoned, an audiobook by W. Clark Russell, opens with a quiet, almost cinematic moment as Miss Lucretia Lane dresses for a marriage she doubts she can live with. The title itself feels like a promise of loss and longing, a hook that pulls you into a world of 19th‑century sea lanes and fragile hearts.
The story unspools over eight years, a relentless tide of love, loathing, shipwreck, and redemption. Lucretia’s misgivings clash with Captain Reynolds’ devotion, and when the Captain is gravely wounded, her flight to his side becomes a desperate, emotional odyssey. The narrative is a study in human frailty—how fear can both bind and free us, how the sea can mirror the depths of the soul.
The audiobook breathes new life into Russell’s prose. A chorus of narrators—each with a distinct timbre—shifts seamlessly between Lucretia’s trembling voice, the Captain’s steady resolve, and the murmurs of the ship’s crew. Their pacing feels like a tide, rising and falling with the plot, and the varied accents add texture to the historical setting.
Listening to Abandoned is like being carried on a ship’s deck at dusk: the wind, the creak of wood, the distant gulls all weave into the narration. The diverse voices keep you anchored, yet they also let you drift into the characters’ private moments. Stream this audiobook for free on Unodio and let the sea carry you home.

My partner overheard me listening and ended up sitting down with me for the rest of it. We're both still talking about it. That's not nothing.
I specifically look for audiobooks with a natural narration style — nothing worse than robotic delivery. This nails it. Very easy to listen to for long stretches.
Some chapters hit differently depending on where you are in life. I think I needed to hear Abandoned right now. Perfect timing, perfect book.
Good balance of depth and accessibility. You don't need a background in this topic to follow along, but it never feels dumbed down either. Well done.
